DNA Testing
“All living organisms have DNA (humans and microorganisms). And, because of Polymerase Chain Reaction, we can now use a simple test to detect the pathogens that are actually causing periodontal infections. This simple to perform test uses sterile paper points placed within the inflamed site to absorb a small amount of crevicular fluid and microorganisms in and around the sulcus. Sent to a laboratory in a prepared container, the DNA of the organisms can be used to determine the exact organisms present. Thus determined, the doctor receives a visual ‘Result Report’ explaining the types of pathogens present, the approximate number present and a specific antibiotic regimen should this be required based upon the severity of the infection.” —Thomas W. Nabors, DDS, Paradigm Changes in Periodontal Disease: How DNA-PCR Changes Everything
The Perio Arts Institute treatment protocol includes salivary DNA testing:
- DNA genetic testing to definitively determine a patient’s inherited vulnerability to periodontal disease and to assess how the disease can be expected to progress. (This testing not only provides crucial information about the patient, it encourages family members to undergo testing—and receive prompt treatment, as needed.)
- DNA bacterial testing to determine the quantity and quality of the patient’s periodontal bacteria so that treatment can be customized for them.
Both of the above tests can be performed with one salivary sample.
